Something different for a Friday - A poem
I am not a poet. And sharing a poem I've wrote is a stretch for me. I'm much better at sharing my essays. So if you're a poem critic, please be kind. I dashed this off in about 10 minutes one day. As what usually happens when I write a poem it sort of comes into my brain and rushes out onto the page. I've held onto this since March and decided tonight to get brave and post it. The above picture is my saddle. It's actually the one custom saddle I have that was built for me at my specifications. Mom and dad got it for me when I was 16. I'm 34. The saddle horn needs re-wrapped but I just wrap it up with athletic tape, it works. The dog collar is for riding colts, you can read about that HERE.
Enough stalling, here's the poem.
The devil’s in the details
Enough stalling, here's the poem.

The Shine’s Wore off my Saddle
Everything I own is older than hell.
Well used.
Well worn.
Well loved.
The shine’s wore off my saddle
and my pad’s a little frayed.
Nothing I own is fancy but I like it that’a way.
If these old reins could talk
The stories they could tell.
These old spurs are 10 years out of style
But it never bothered me.
The devil’s in the details
And the details are just this.
A life that’s lived is not shiny and new.
It’s dusty.
It’s faded.
It’s soft and worn with use.
Knock the shine off your saddle.
Get spur marks on your boots.
Never feel ashamed your gear might show some use.
That use shows you’re living.
That dust is from the trail you tread.
Well used.
Well worn.
Well loved.
The shine’s wore off my saddle
And my pad’s a little frayed.
Nothing I own is fancy but I like it that’a way.
I like it--good phrasing, good hook line, especially love the line "never feel ashamed your gear might show some use." If it doesn't, we might not have done much of importance.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I've been reading and listening to a lot of buckaroo/western music and poetry lately. Ive always loved Baxter Black his stories and poems are always so good.
