Stories of the South - Savannah Missionary Baptist Church
There's nothing quite as sad as an abandoned church is there? This frame church is located on Cooksville Road off Highway 14 in Noxubee County Mississippi. We pass it every Sunday on the way to church and on the way home a few weeks ago I had the hubby stop and let me get a few pictures.
There are no pews left that I could see, just one sad little table in a back corner. The front stoop of the church has collapsed and I didn't dare go up the steps to get a better look. There is a chimney on one side, but no sign of the fireplace or the mantle.
Even the sign of the church has not been immune to the neglect, its broken off at the base and lying on its side. I was only able to tell what it said because the Savannah Fire Department is next door.
But even as neglected as the church and sign are someone still tends to the property. The grass was cut late in the year and the graves are still tended somewhat and several have flowers. I'm hoping to stop again in the spring when things are a little more green and I have some more time. Here's to hoping it doesn't collapse before then.
