Stories of the South - Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Mantee, MS
Remember the Kudzu? Sure you do. If you turn on that little road it leads up to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery and Church. The day me and mom were out roaming around, letting Allie nap, and taking pictures it was about to flood. I didn't have time to take all the pictures I wanted but I got a couple.
Mt. Pleasant Church was built around 1850. It is a one room church and was in use up until the late 1950's. The church was built from heart pine lumber, and even though it has not been in use regularly for years is still in great condition due to lumber from which it was built.
The church has had some damage over the years, but the community loves the church and cemetery and have always made sure that it is kept in pristine condition. Every time there is damage, repairs are made to the church even if no one worships there anymore.
This church and cemetery hold so many good memories for me, weird as that is. Every second Saturday in May we would gather here to lay flowers, meet and greet family we hadn't seen in a year and remember. Which is always a good thing. Then we would adjourn to Billy and Louise Pepper's house to eat and talk some more.
Such a small building, way out in the country, and such a huge part of my childhood, I'll talk about the cemetery another day. That's good enough for now.
Have a good Monday my lovelies. Until next time.
